Rev’s Mid-Week Thought

Many have learned that prayer is always associated with personal moments and quiet, private reflection only. No doubt when I first said the phrase, “We must be a praying church in this moment of ‘what’s next,'” you probably were initially taken aback. The idea of a community coming together to pray collectively was a new concept or, at the very least, something not implemented regularly. This explains why we are so shy during “prayers of the people” at the end of each worship service. My mind goes back to when I was young and tasked with giving the morning prayer before worship. I was beside myself with anxiety because the task was a bit daunting. I was afraid I wouldn’t measure up to the eloquent and profound prayers I had heard from others. But as I have grown and gained experience, I have come to understand that prayer is not about our words but our hearts’ sincerity.

It has been a humbling and refreshing realization that God is not concerned with our words’ perfection but our intentions’ authenticity. Knowing that, it has become an honor for me to be asked to pray for someone or a loved one. It is a privilege to connect with the divine and ask for guidance, healing, and peace for ourselves and others. Prayer has become a source of strength and comfort for me, especially during times of worry or uncertainty.

I have also learned that prayer is not just about asking for specific results but about connecting with the source of all goodness and trusting in the divine plan for our lives. It is about visualizing and affirming the truth of God’s abundance and love for all of us. As we come together in prayer, we are opening ourselves up to receive blessings and extending love and support to those we pray for. It is a beautiful and powerful practice that unites us as a faith community and reminds us of our true nature as perfect spiritual beings.

The notion of being a praying church in this moment of “what’s next” has been a transformative one for me. It has taught me the importance of sincere and authentic prayer, the power of collective prayer, and the truth of God’s abundance and love for all of us. I am grateful for the reminder to trust in God’s plan and to maintain vigilance in prayer, as it truly is a pleasure and a privilege to connect with the divine and each of you through prayer.

“Let your light shine before all of humanity, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
